Residential air conditioning repair

Your AC needs a diagnosis.
Not a guess.

When the air conditioner stops keeping up, start with what you have noticed. KOLD investigates cooling problems and explains the repair options for homes in Raleigh, Cary and surrounding communities.

You can describe the problem without naming the part.

“It runs, but the house stays warm.” “There’s water by the indoor unit.” “It works for a while, then stops.” Those are useful starting points. You do not need to diagnose the equipment before requesting service.

Running, but not cooling

Tell us whether the problem affects the whole house or just part of it, and whether the airflow has changed.

Not starting or stopping repeatedly

Let us know what the thermostat shows and what you hear when the system tries to run.

Ice or water around the equipment

Describe where you see it. A photo taken from a safe, accessible position can help show the issue.

A problem that keeps returning

Previous invoices or a description of earlier repairs can help us understand the history.

The symptom is the starting point.

Poor cooling can involve airflow, controls, electrical components or the refrigerant circuit. The same complaint does not point to the same repair in every system.

We check the equipment rather than assuming it needs a replacement or a particular part. After the diagnosis, we explain what we found and the repair we recommend.

Older system? Let’s look at it.

Age matters, but it is not the whole decision. A repair may be sensible when the fault is limited and the rest of the system is in reasonable condition. A costly failure or repeated trouble may make replacement worth discussing.

KOLD’s approach is to help you understand that choice. We are not starting with a rule that every old air conditioner should go.

A few useful checks, without opening the equipment.

Check that the thermostat is set to cooling and below the current room temperature. Note whether an accessible filter appears dirty and whether room vents are blocked. You can share those observations when you contact us.

If you see ice, turn cooling off and arrange a diagnosis. Do not chip the ice or apply heat. Leave electrical panels and refrigerant work to a technician; do not repeatedly reset a breaker that trips.

Service for all major HVAC brands.

KOLD services all major HVAC brands. Send the brand or a label photo when you have it; not knowing the model should never stop you from asking for help.

What will the repair cost?

That depends on the cause, the parts involved and the condition of the equipment. A symptom alone is not enough to give you a useful repair quote.

Ask about the diagnostic visit and any charges when arranging service. Once the problem has been assessed, we can discuss the repair and whether other options deserve a look.

Helpful answers

Common questions

Does ice mean I need a new air conditioner?

Not necessarily. Restricted airflow and refrigerant problems are among the possible causes. Turn cooling off and have the cause checked before deciding on repair or replacement.

Can you diagnose it from a photo?

A photo can help you explain the problem, but it does not replace examining and testing the system. Photos and model numbers are optional when making a request.

Should I get another opinion before replacing it?

A second opinion can help you understand a major repair or replacement recommendation. KOLD will assess the equipment independently and explain the findings, even when the conclusion is the same.

Can I book an exact arrival time online?

No. The website sends a service request. KOLD will contact you to confirm the details and arrange a visit.
